WELCOME
Roberta and I were lucky to have some of our family visit the farm for the 4th. Lunch on the screen porch, on a perfect day on the prairie, fit the bill for Bobby, Annika, Phil, Todd, and Roberta. Inger was the photographer for this one.
Most of us in my generation remember back to the early days on the farm when our parents would follow the corn crops' progress and believe that if it make "knee high" by the 4th of July it would probably be a good crop. This year, the corn, a hybrid that was developed for rapid growth, strong stalks, large ears, hundreds of kernels, and "Roundup ready" for weed control, and after "just right" amounts of rain, warm weather, fertilizer, insect spraying, and sunshine, makes mockery of the "knee high" concept.
But , of course, the crop still has to avoid drought, flood, hail, wind and derechos. However, it sure is fun to look at the fields of plenty at this point!
The Black Slough Running Club had five entries in the Hendricks Summerfest 5K event this year . There were some notable finishers in the group and some not so much. But, all were finishers!
Phil & Todd at the finish line!
Bobby is celebrating being two thirds done with law school.
Annika strives to look patriotic and I and Bobby unfurl the flag!
Memorial Day 2023
The
Memorial Day signals the beginning of the summer season. Even though grandson Bobby couldn't be here this year, Todd and I maintained our tradition of joining "Taps Across America" to honor all veterans, living and dead. It was a beautiful day on the South Dakota prairies!
After a very eventful Spring season we look forward to summer on the farm. The crops have a good start, we have had good rains, and people are wanting an exciting summer to put the trials of Covid behind them. I'm resolving to make good use of every day!
